I had first noticed the treacherous mountain from a far, casting an ominous shadow to the 'scape below, where I stood now. The immaculate sun glistened behind it, its rays stretching out like long tendrils of fingers at its sides. The light could not reach me here. It was degrees colder in the shade, a welcomed relief from the brutal summer. I stared up at the foreboding face, head cocked slightly to the side. I could not make out its top. Clouds funneled down around it until its form was completely consumed. Perhaps it just kept leading up until it broke its way straight into the heavens. Perplexing.
Naturally, this was challenge I wanted to overcome. So with determination I made my way to the base, running my muzzle over a the sharp face. A piece of jagged rock just snagged my lip and brought blood to the surface. I snapped back at the prick, scowling, as I felt hot crimson seep into the creases of my lips. I ran my tongue over the wound, wondering if I should second guess my decision to climb this mountain. Nah.
I sank back on my haunches and lunged into the air, landing deftly along a small outcropping only a few feet off the ground. Just a couple hundred more of those and I'd be at the top in no time. A smirk drew onto my features and I repeated the process. I nimbly jumped onto another ledge, tripping just a terrifying moment as a few loose pebble rolled beneath me before toppling precariously over the edge. I watched them crash onto the rocks below. And I wasn't even 20 feet up yet. From a tree growing out of the side of the face, a duo of black crows arose in a great cacophony from the bushes, spooked by my journey. I snorted wildly at them, a bit spooked myself, before throwing my head in silent defiance to their grave warning.
The view from up above was promising and so I took another trusting leap up the sheer cliff. This time, I was not so fortunate. I struck unstable ground and my forelimb gave out from beneath me, skinning on the rocky surface and threatening to sent me spilling to an uncomfortable fall. I scrambled, found traction beneath me and pulled myself up with a grunt of effort. A fine line of blood bubbled out from my shin and I held it gingerly, keeping the weight off it and frowned in disdain. God Damn it.
