harlequin is quite the tough cookie to crack. growing up in her pack with the only other female being her mother, harlequin grew up around the ways of boys. her mother tried to instill femininity in her, but harlequin never caught on. her mother was a dainty little thing who did little more than birth cubs for her mate, and harely never understood it. she played with her brothers as a cub, getting dirty, not bothering to keep her pelt too clean. she didn't want to be just some useless, helpless girl to them. sadly, as they got older, that was all they really saw her as. harely was a clever pup, but she quickly realized that this trait was not appreciated by most of her family. a smart female could mean trouble for the boys, so harely learned to play dumb so as not to get on the bad side of her family. she still resented it though, being treated like she could do nothing. she knew it was expected of her to one day find a mate and create pups, and that was all that was expected of her. she hated it.
her relationship with her mother had never been wonderful. she had abandoned the ways of the woman and adopted the ways of the man in order to fit in with her brothers. she had not lived up to her mother's expectations of the daughter she had always desired. harely knew all this and accepted it. her mother would never truly love her. it never really bothered harely. she was girl, and so not truly accepted by her brothers and father, but in her younger days she knew there was nothing that could be done. as she has aged she has become determined to have something be done. being put down as useless for most of her life has left her with a desire to be useful.
harely can easily read the emotions of others. she's very grounded and usually knows what's going on. it's almost instinct for her to notice small gestures sometimes does subconsciously and analyze them. she can pick up on the thoughts of a wolf before words even come from their mouth. this doesn't help her be any gentler with them, however. harely isn't one to sugarcoat. if she has a thought, good or bad, she'll more often than not say it. she doesn't beat around the bush either, and isn't a fan of those who do. she doesn't mean to be unkind with her bluntness, but it's not often that she will realize something might be hurtful before it comes out of her mouth. she is very factual and isn't good with things like sarcasm or jokes. she will often takes harmless comment literally.
despite her ability to easily read emotions, harely doesn't show very many of them. it's not really on purpose, she's just not a very expressive being. because of this she can often come across as cold. she really doesn't mean too and is actually quite friendly, if not sometimes a bit shy at first. this stems from her deepest, darkest secret. despite her tomboyish nature, harely cannot deny the truth. she is, in fact, female, and just like all other females there are certain things about her that she cannot ignore. for one thing: the opposite sex. finding a mate has never really interested her, but it's hard to tell whether this is from her desire to be different from her mother or if she's truly not interested. the former is more likely. despite herself, she find herself getting a bit nervous around a handsome boy, and it's not as if the thought of a family has never occurred to her. growing up, she never did experience true, unconditional "love", and so the feeling is slightly unfamiliar to her and she is unsure if she wanted to experience it or not. she does have a secret desire to be treated like the woman she is, but still respected for who she is.
she is a bit emotionally immature, her life experience being a bit less than average than the normal for a wolf her age. she is not yet skilled in the art of socialization and is still a bit naive about the feelings of others. still, she is eager to learn. her knowledge of the world is limited and she is determined to learn as much about it as possible.

image. harely is a little thing, getting most of her genes from her mother. her build and stature scream dainty little female, long skinny legs and thin body. her neck is thick with fur which thins out when reaching her skull. her forehead slopes gently down to her muzzle which is thin and also very feminine. her paws are quite small and dainty at the end of her legs. her tail isn't too long, but just enough to be graceful. her eyes sit in her skull, somewhat small and surrounded by thick lines of black like makeup. the iris is a pale yellow, but it is almost like the color has faded so there is a silvery tinge. the color fades even more as it reaches her pupil, a black dot in the center.
most of her fur, the exception being around her throat and her tail, lies flat against her body. harley isn't very fuzzy. thick around her body, her pelts thins along her legs, tufting only slightly on her elbows. if the fur around her neck was any fluffier it could be described as mane-like, but even here where the fur grows thick and soft it stays relatively flat. her tail is an exception, but only half. the hairs lie sleek along her tail bone, and fluff up only on the underside.
the base color of her pelt could be described as a cream or light sandy color. lighter along her belly and legs, it darkens to a sandier hue along her sides. along her back and spine is where the grays start to appear. silvery-gray hairs lie along her backbone, mixed in with browns and tans and the occasional black thread. around her throat the black is more present, thickening in the fur and mixing with all the other colors. a silvery, sandy cream color continues down her forehead and then the gray disappears as it reached her muzzle. her chin is the same pale cream as her belly, and the black reappears on the inside of her ears while the backsides are a darker sandy hue. the majority of her tail is a sandy-cream, but black is present at the base and tip and gray fades into the fur.

history •
orion was the eldest of his litter, both larger and stronger than his two brothers and small sister. he was generally good natured as well and well behaved. he did have an odd view on genders, believing males to be dominant and just completely better than females. they were bigger, stronger, probably smarter. the males led the pack, all females really had to do was bear his young. it was a view he'd adopted himself, it not being shared by the rest of his family.
most would have said he was the handsomest of all the males in his pack, and his ego swelled because of it. so, when his small family ran across another small pack, of course he attracted the attention of the daughters. there was only one that caught his eye, however. in the brief time their packs crossed paths he managed to learn her name and exchange a few words. her name was iris, and she had the most beautiful creamy white pelt of fur he'd ever laid eyes on. he couldn't keep his eyes off of her, and she seemed just as attracted to him as well. and why shouldn't she? he was quite good looking, after all.
orion had been planning for a while to leave his pack and become a lone bachelor, going out in search of a female to start a pack with. maybe he could take a shortcut. one night the pair planned to elope to the hills. iris was eager enough to start a family, or at least be rid of her current one. maybe the idea of pups didn't excite her that much, children had never been her favorite things in the world, but it seemed she wouldn't have a choice in the matter seeing as orion was her only way out. she didn't mind him completely taking charge over her, iris had always been a bit more submissive. in a way the two were perfect for each other.
it wasn't long before the pair had found an empty patch of land and iris was expecting her first litter. this wasn't harley's litter, this clutch contained two males, both strong like their father but resembling their mother more. the two grew up quickly, and iris was quickly expecting again. despite iris's request for a season off, orion insisted on procreation, and in the end she could not refuse him. pregnancy was hard though. very tiring. but orion wanted strong healthy children to carry on his bloodline, and iris could not deny him that. the second litter was born, this one containing three: two boys and a girl. yes, this girl is harley. one boy was a dark gray, almost black, while harely and her other brother resembled their father more, though harley had inherited her mother's dainty figure.
content with four healthy sons, orion allowed iris to rest for the time being before reproducing again. he took the job of raising his boys while he left harley to iris to be taught the ways of the girl. her mother actually insisted on calling her daughter harlequin, the name she'd been given. it was her brothers that had named their sister harely, and she simply adored the name, though her parents refused to call her by it. harely could not stand it when her mother talked about how a girl must always look her best and constantly be clean and manicured. she could not sit through a lesson about proper manners and etiquette. harely would have much more preferred her father's lessons about hunting and fighting. of course she was taught how to survive on her own, though her mother dearly hoped she would never have to use those skills, but she was never with her brothers. she would often try to convince her father that she was smart and worthy of learning from him, but every time she tried to prove her cleverness she was shot down, and sometimes even physical punishment was used. he did not approve of her sharing her opinion, even if she was right, and harely quickly learned to keep her mouth shut and play dumb. in every free minute she had she would play with them, and they loved to play with their sister. they adored her.
things changed when they got older, of course. her father's views were forcefully transferred to her brothers, and though they may not have completely agreed with him, they could not defy him on the issue. they could no longer play with their sister, nor hunt with her, nor teach her anything. they were granted little more than familial contact with her, and harely was left with no one but her mother for company, cut off from the siblings she loved so. she had once believed they had loved her as well, but had they truly if they were able to cast her aside so easily? very quickly she became to doubt the feeling.
her two older brothers soon left to find and make lives of their own, and then it was only her own litter that remained. orion began talk of more cubs with iris, and though she wasn't fond of the thought she could not refuse her mate. it wasn't long before she was expecting for a third time. harley already knew her future without having to be told. her father had not yet talked about allowing her to leave him, so the only option left was nursemaid to her new siblings. the thought sickened her, taking car of children with her mother while her brothers went off on adventures into the world. she couldn't watch while any daughters born were put through the same torment as her. she could not stay, and she wouldn't.
harley resolved to leave, and that's exactly what she did. she didn't need to think about it. the thought hit her one morning and later that day when neither of her parents were around she simply started walking and didn't stop, didn't look back. she almost couldn't get far enough. she hunted when she was hungry, slept when tired, drank when thirty, but she never stopped traveling. she saw so many things that amazed her that she could never even dream of trapped in her former home with her parents. she met many different wolves and told her so many things about the world. harley ate up any information she could get.
eventually she could walk no more. she had reached a beach, the sand underpaw was soft and she had never felt anything like it before. fish swam in the water, but when she tried to drink it salt dried her tongue and she couldn't help but wonder what was wrong with the water. a wolf had told her about salty water. it was called the ocean, and it went on almost forever. she definitely couldn't see any land, it wasn't just some big lake, and the water confirmed it. this was the ocean. she spent a few days on the beach, resting and hunting and building up her strength. she didn't want to stop though, and though it didn't seem very logical, she couldn't help but try it out. she practiced her swimming, finding a smooth and efficient stroke, and then one day set out swimming into the ocean toward what seemed to be the sky.
the beach disappeared behind her, and soon there was just blue. blue water, blue sky, she couldn't even see a cloud. she kept going, though, and swam into the night and the next day. she was thirsty, but she knew she could not drink the water. she was hungry, but all attempts at catching fish were futile. the only thing she could do was swim. she did manage to discover a way to rest by floating, but she could not sleep for fear of sinking. in the end, she simply kept swimming.
land appeared on the horizon eventually, but from when she saw it, it took her all day to reach the tiny black dot that ended up being an island. it was large, and though harley desperately wanted to explore it, she had more pressing matters to attend to. she hunted until her belly was full and managed to find a freshwater stream to quench her unbearable, burning thirst. and then she took a nice, long sleep. she woke up in the middle of the day and wasn't sure if she had slept for one or two days. well rested, and moved deeper into the island. seeing many different things. other animals were present, large four-legged things that weren't wolves, but she had never seen them before. they looked like big deer. she learned they were horses and they ate grass like deer. she heard word of a wolf pack on the island, a small one, and decided if they were the only wolves they were worth seeking out.

why was she even here?! all of a sudden hazelpaw had said she wanted to go for a walk and cornpaw had asked where and hazelpaw had said riverclan territory. riverclan territory?! what the hell?! shadowclan apprentices did not go tromping around riverclan territory, especially not with their territory cut in pieces and a disease running rampant?! no, this is not what shadowclan apprentices did. yes, the camp was hot and stuffy, and yes the tension was suffocating, but they could have at least stayed within the new borders, seriously. they'd be dead if one of the other clans caught them, and if a shadowclanner found out they were double dead. rockfoot would kill her if he found out...or would he? he was so wrapped up with pebblefoot nowadays she wondered if he even remembered she was there. she was probably just another cat carrying the disease that might affect his precious mate. she was his mate, and she was pregnant, but he acted as if they weren't even his clan and he was at war or something. she couldn't remember the last time she trained with him.
all the events put her in a bad mood, but the mud squelching between her toes and the whining voice of hazelpaw in her ear was just not making anything better. "strange. i thought all the seasons were the same length." she didn't even know why she was friends with the she-cat. she didn't get on her nerves...most of the time. maybe she was just sick of being alone while cats dropped like flies around her. the younger apprentice had been nearby and she'd started up a nice conversation, trying to be a bit friendlier than usual and now somehow she'd been dragged out on this little escapade. well, at least she was sitting in camp anymore, watching cats die right before her eyes and being ignored by rockfoot.
she stopped trudging when hazelpaw waved were tail in the orange tabby's face and cornpaw was tempted to bite it. apparently she'd heard something or other. her ears flicked, her partly missing tail still in midair. voices, and riverclan scent. something was definitely moving. suddenly a cat sprung out of the reeds and something green flew through the air. hazelpaw leaped out of the way, putting her in the direct path of water it was. something wet and slimy hit her in the face, stuck for a moment, and slid down her face and onto the mud. she looked down, staring at the bloodied frog for a few moments. it looked like a piece of prey. that damned riverclan cat had hit her with his stupid piece of prey. she looked up, searching for the culprit, and her faint green eyes landed upon the orange apprentice. her eyes narrowed to slits. this was the last straw.
she bounded forward, barreling into the cat, pushing him down. she stood over him and her paws came down on his head, forcing his face into the mud. she was not gonna put up with some bratty riverclan kit throwing amphibians in her face. if he liked eating slimy frogs then he shouldn't have a problem with the mud. of course shadowclan ate frogs all the time, but she never touched the things. she couldn't stomach the creatures, just wasn't in her genes she supposed. that was what she got for not being a clan cat she supposed. she glanced up at the other cat and away from her muddied victim, almost daring the black tom to try and stop her. if this was the only fun thing she did today she was not letting this guy get in her way.
she hadn't noticed hazelpaw's unfortunate accident until she finally stopped to see what her friend was up to. she was surprised to see her face down in the mud, supposedly stuck. the riverclan cat hadn't gotten to her, eh hadn't moved. it seemed this was a situation she'd gotten herself into. cornpaw wasn't moving from her perch atop the orange brat, so she looked to the other guy to see if he would do anything. hazelpaw had dragged her out there, and she certainly hadn't tried to stop that frog from flying at her. a little bit of punishment wouldn't do any harm.
from a warrior's site here. i'm ashes on there. this was posted 8/18/12.
